Maybe because we tend to think other people are better and steadier than us. We have a lot of thoughts and anxiety and fears, so complex that this compilation of opinions has so become our identity, and we can't let anyone know our insecurities and struggles.

So basically we teach other to be afraid of being judged, that some confident dumb people make use of it to condescend other people, because they never analyse themselves like normal people.
But with the other ones who try to give their best social performance, you can be sure that they're simply the same as you, trying to protect their own fears and cover up their quirks. And I believe that's when we can use intimacy and love.
Give in a little more, try to adjust your bones to fit in other person's molding. You'll see that they need someone to validate their feelings too.
